Two dogs were rescued weeks apart from two different shelters in South Carolina. Both dogs come from ɴɪɢʜᴛᴍᴀʀᴇ situations. But at a veterinary clinic this week, it just took a while for them to understand each other.
Simon, a 1-year old border Collie, still recovering from a ᴘᴀɪɴꜰᴜʟ experience at the hands of his former owner, gently lifted his paw onto the ᴏᴘᴇʀᴀᴛɪɴɢ ᴛᴀʙʟᴇ and placed it on Sammie’s leg.
A 4-month-old puppy, Sammie was also ᴀʙᴜsᴇᴅ in a previous life, being dragged by a car, sprayed with paint, and shot. But on that day, despite a series of medical procedures, Sammie received comfort from a surviving friend.
“I can’t have compassion and understanding among animals,” says Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. Maybe it was the pain they shared. Or maybe it’s the future they’re sharing. Thanks to the efforts of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, the organization got these dogs out of a nearby shelter and gave them the treatment they desperately needed.
After undergoing emergency treatment, both dogs will survive their ordeal. Sammie may still be missing a leg he was sʜᴏᴛ with a 22-caliber rifle but he has made precious friends. Like a survivor friend standing by his side every step of the way.
At the veterinary clinic, Simon did not leave Sammie. Maybe he knows the little boxer mix needs all the compassion he can get. While Simon is rapidly regaining his strength and will soon be adopted, Sammie still has many ways to continue her recovery.
O’Sullivan says he “will likely need multiple sᴜʀɢᴇʀɪᴇs, physical therapy, laser therapy and daily dressing changes. As a puppy, behavioral therapy is also possible because of him was ʀᴏʙʙᴇᴅ of a ‘normal’ childhood.”
Don’t worry, Sammie. Now you are in the right hand And feet.
