Buddy, Dog Who Was Sᴇᴠᴇʀᴇʟʏ Bᴜʀɴᴇᴅ By Child, Now ‘Fully Healed’ One Year Later

A year ago, a dog named Buddy made headlines after being the victim of a horrific Bᴜʀɴᴇᴅ caused by a child, leaving his face severely scarred.

But this dog has never lost his cool, and over the past few months has made an amazing recovery and now a year later his new owner has confirmed the good news that Buddy is “fully recovered.” and is doing very well.

Buddy first made headlines last April, after he returned home with severe ʙᴜʀɴs to his face after being set on fire. His skin was charred, and the burn was so severe that his eyes were so puffy that he couldn’t see anything. He also has an extension cord around his neck, apparently used to hold him down.

The perpetrator of the horrific attack was later identified as a child, who confessed to burning the dog but could not be charged under Mississippi law, which states that no one under the age of 12 can be prosecuted. Buddy’s injuries were so severe, he had to surrender to the Humane Society of Tunica for proper treatment. His veterinarians were shocked by the case and warned at the time that the dog had a long way to go, saying that “for now its prognosis is not good.”

Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, associate professor and veterinary sᴜʀɢᴇᴏɴ, told WTVA: “Buddy’s vital signs are good, but as with any burn patient, this is almost the end of a life high mountain to climb”.

Buddy was later transferred to Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine for further treatment, and veterinarians were impressed by his positive attitude despite everything.

“He was in good spirits, wagging his tail and very cooperative,” wrote the Humane Society.

Over time, Buddy continued to heal his wounds. With a bandage wrapped around his head, Buddy couldn’t see, but vets were relieved to discover that the burn hadn’t damaged his eyelids. “He keeps moving forward every day, never once letting the doctor down. Everyone involved was very pleased with the results of his skin graft. Burn injuries are a very slow process but Buddy is healing excellently.”

In today’s dressing change, he showed a noticeable improvement in his face. While Buddy continues to recover, he is learning some basic commands. After several months of progress, Buddy underwent a skin graft that left him with less bandages, allowing him to slowly return to his old self.

Buddy hit a major milestone last August after vets finally removed the bandages from his face, allowing him to see for the first time in months.

“His eyes were really open and he was very conscious,” wrote the Humane Society. The last real memory of Buddy’s vision is in the final moments of horror just before his face was burned by a child. In the blink of an eye, this dog’s whole life changed.

Finally being able to see was a big step towards returning to normal for this poor dog, and his caretakers say his personality is starting to shine again. Buddy’s entire personality has changed since seeing the light of day.

He’s fun, naughty, and walks the halls of the hospital with a big ball in his mouth. He loves balls. He carried them everywhere so everyone could see them.

And recently, a year after Buddy suffered horrendous burns, the Humane Society released another inspirational update: Buddy is now “completely healed.”

Buddy is living in a foster home with Dr. Swanson, and the vet confirms that Buddy is living his best life.

The Tunica Humane Society wrote: “His face is now completely healed. “He no longer has to wear an electronic necklace and he loves it! His days are now spent like any normal dog. Play catch, go hiking, pamper his awesome dog!”

Buddy’s miraculous recovery from his near-fatal injuries is truly a Miracle and all those who care for him have much to be proud of.
