An employee at a local dog breeder who helped give birth to a litter of Dachshund puppies was surprised when one of them was born with an intact ᴀᴍɴɪᴏᴛɪᴄ sᴀᴄ . The jelly bean puppy was helped out of the bag after taking some photos to give us an insight into what the puppies look like inside the womb.
During the pregnancy of this mammal, the developing young are encased in an ᴀᴍɴɪᴏᴛɪᴄ sᴀᴄ filled with essential fluids and nutrients. Bubbles create a protective cushion to protect puppies right from the womb to help the respiratory system, digestive system and skeletal system develop healthier. In humans, the onset of labor is often signaled by “amniotic rupture,” which is the normal rupture of the amniotic sac before birth. A similar process occurs with puppies in that the ᴀᴍɴɪᴏᴛɪᴄ sᴀᴄ usually ruptures before the puppy is born.
But among them, a rare case like Cosmo is that they can be born with the bag intact. This phenomenon is called preterm birth and occurs in about 1 in 80,000 human births.
Karis Small, a canine paramedic from Devon, England, delivered Dachshund Maggie earlier this month when Cosmo appeared with the appearance of one of the alien eggs that have caused fever for years. When she found out, she took a few pictures before quickly helping Cosmo out of the bag so he could start breathing normally.
In a litter of puppies, each will develop in the amniotic sac with its own placenta, which is responsible for providing them with oxygenated blood. After puppies are born, this blood supply is depleted and they must rely on their ability to breathe on their own to survive. Despite being a “fantastic” moment, Karis said Cosmo’s birth could have been in jeopardy if she hadn’t had his help.
Witnessing the puppies is always a magical experience but it’s even more special to see Cosmo being born still in a bag, something most people will never see. And Karis wants to show everyone what it’s like to be a livestock support specialist. People think that puppies are left alone, but we have to take care of them more.
